Here's why people are angry about Miley Cyrus' pride outfit

miley cryusThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Miley Cyrus was one of the headliners at the DC Pride Parade and people were not happy that she performed wearing rainbow bindi, a cultural item worn by people who practice Hinduism.
  • The sacred item has caused an uproar on social media as people claim cultural appropriation to her look.
  • People are angry at her for turning the bindi into a fashion accessory.

Another day, another Miley Cyrus controversy. While being one of the headliners at this past weekend’s D.C. Pride, Cyrus stepped on stage wearing a rainbow bindi, a cultural item worn by people who practice Hinduism. This sacred item has caused an uproar on social media, and have some fans citing cultural appropriation in her look.

As Cyrus’ look included various stick-on jewels rather than the traditional red bindi, some have defended her and said it’s not cultural appropriation. However, others still say that altering the bindi and turning it into a fashion accessory is an example of using a culture’s clothing and history as a costume is a key example of cultural appropriation.

Love more. It's never tooooo much. It's never enough! Love Love Love! @happyhippiefdn Today we remember all those souls we lost at Pulse in Orlando..... they were taken because of hate ...discrimination ....the divide.... let's erase all of this and draw a big heart in the sand instead! No more lines between you and me..... us and them... we are all the same! Humans ! Animals ! Trees ! Clouds! Oceans ! WE all can relate on the fact that we are in such desperate need of RESPECT! We must take care of one another! Treat strangers like life long friends! Treat the earth like it's the only we have (because it is) !!!!! Treat animals like they have feelings (because they do) !!!! Looooove Loooove Loooooove! & MORE!

While it’s doubtful that Cyrus’ intent was to hurt anyone, in order for us to be more inclusive, it’s important to remember that even some of the most classic fashion looks from the 90s(which continues to have it’s moment) are mega appropriative.

With everything from Gwen Stefani’s bindi to Madonna’s ‘white geisha’ look, the 90s had some super problematic moments and it’s important to remember the difference between appreciation and appropriation. When you get invited to wear traditional clothing to a wedding or event, go for it! Buying moccasins from an Indigenous craftsperson? Money well spent. Dressing up borrowing from another culture simply for a look? Don’t do it!

We can appreciate and enjoy other cultures while being respectful of them, and it’s always a good reminder that while our hearts are in the right place (as we’re sure Miley’s was), we can all make mistakes from time to time.

celebrities first jobs

Celebrities, they're just like us! Or at least they used to be before they became some of our favorite icons.

From Nicki Minaj waitressing at Red Lobster to Fetty Wap wrapping packages at Fed-Ex, these celebrities' first jobs were far from their current glamorous lives.

Here are 19 celebrities who started off at the bottom before their talents paid off.

Nicki Minaj was a waitress at Red Lobster.

Before she was beefing with other female artists, the only drama Minaj faced during her rise to fame was from her customers at Red Lobster.

According to GQ Magazine, the "No Frauds" songstress waited tables at the popular chain restaurant in high school until she was eventually fired for "discourtesy to customers."

"I chased a customer out of the restaurant once so I could stick my middle finger up at her and demand that she give me my pen back,"Minaj told Billboard. "I swear to God I was bad."

Gwen Stefani started off as a Dairy Queen clerk.

Before Gwen was slaying the top of the charts, you could normally catch her behind the cash register making a blizzard at your local Dairy Queen.

Stefani told Marie Claire back in March that the dessert franchise is in fact where she made her first dollar.

Fetty Wap worked at FedEx for only 2 days.

Before he was rapping hit lyrics, he was actually wrapping packages.

Fetty Wap only worked at FedEx for about 48 hours before a one week stint at Popeyes. He told Interview magazine that at that time he just "needed a check." We're guessing he's doing just fine now.

Busy New Yorkers don’t often give subway musicians a second glance, but Miley Cyrus and Jimmy Fallon attracted a crowd of lucky commuters Wednesday when they pretended to be buskers in the busy Rockefeller Center station.

The 24-year-old songstress donned a dark wig, sunglasses and cowboy hat for the impromptu appearance, but fans quickly recognized Cyrus’ husky voice as she expertly belted out Dolly Parton’s 1973 hit “Jolene.”

The “Tonight Show” host played tambourine alongside the pop star who later tore off her disguise amidst cheers from the crowd as she launched into a live version of her own single “Party in the U.S.A.”

“This is my first time at the subway station,” she told the disbelieving crowd. “This is exciting s—t for me.”

In honor of Pride Month, the singer recently released a track from her forthcoming album titled “Inspired,” with a portion of sales being donated to her own Happy Hippie Foundation.

Hollywood has graced us with some of the most memorable couples we've seen in the spotlight.

From Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson's newlywed fun to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's whirlwind romance, INSIDER looks back at the groundbreaking celebrity couples that took pop culture by storm.

Take a look at these seven iconic celebrity lovebirds and find out if their romance stood the test of time.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Before "Brangelina," there was Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. They seemed happily married, until January 2005 when Aniston filed for divorce for "irreconcilable differences." Not long before she filed, Pitt and actress Angelina Jolie starred in the summer 2004 film "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." The pair raised eyebrows in July of 2005  when Jolie was pregnant with their first biological child three months after Pitt's divorce from Aniston was finalized. The couple later went on to have five more children and officially married in August of 2014.

After 6 kids, a wedding, and several films later, the couple decided to call it quits.

Brangelina became no more when Jolie filed for divorce in September of 2016 and asked for full custody of their children. According to TMZ, she didn't agree with the way Pitt parented their six children.

In September, the FBI investigated Pitt for charges of child abuse onboard a private plane. In November, Pitt was cleared of all charges. He told GQ Magazine that he and Jolie are ultimately trying to make things work for the kids.

"We've been able to work together to sort this out," Pitt said. "We're both doing our best. I heard one lawyer say, 'No one wins in court — it's just a matter of who gets hurt worse.'”

Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey became a pop culture phenomenon after they married in 2002. Following their nuptials, MTV documented their married adventures on "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica."

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Miley Cyrus posted a throwback photo of her first kiss with fiancé Liam Hemsworth.
  • They met on the set of the 2009 film "The Last Song."

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have gone through so many stages in their relationship — from dating to being engaged to breaking up to her twerking on Robin Thicke to their eventual reunion— that it's easy to forget how they met.

But Cyrus, 24, reminded the internet of the couple's sweet origin story courtesy of an eight-year-old throwback snap on Twitter in honor of International Kissing Day on July 6.

"Happy #InternationalKissingDay!" she tweeted. "Our first smooch 8 years ago!"

For those not in the know, the photo was taken on the set of the 2009 film "The Last Song" where the couple met. They played love interests in the movie, then eventually, their romance blossomed offscreen.

Cyrus and Hemsworth have not been photographed too often since they got back together in 2016, but she has been vocal about the fact that the first single off her new album, "Malibu," was inspired by Hemworth. However, her fans were ecstatic for even a throwback glimpse of the couple together.

But true to her personal brand, noted animal advocate Cyrus also had to show some love to her furry friends for the holiday as well.

'Private' photos of celebrities have been leaked online again — here's how to protect yourself from hackers

Miley Cyrus 2017

The INSIDER Summary:

  • On Monday, celebrities' intimate photos were stolen and leaked online in yet another photo hack.
  • After her private photos were leaked in 2014, Jennifer Lawrence called photo hacks a "sexual violation" and called for legal change.
  • So far, only 38 states and Washington, DC, have laws against digital harassment and revenge porn.
  • There's nothing wrong with celebrating your body, but there are a few steps you can take that may keep your content safe.
  • Double-check your storage settings on your devices, enable two-factor authentication on your online accounts, and make sure you have strong passwords.

Miley Cyrus, Kristen Stewart, and Tiger Woods are reportedly among the latest victims of yet another celebrity photo hack.

On Monday, the stars' private photos surfaced online, TMZ reported. (INSIDER has chosen not to name the website that published the photos.) Since then, Woods and his ex-girlfriend, Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn, have allegedly threatened to sue the site for its "despicable invasion of privacy," a spokesman for Vonn told People.

It's not the first time celebrities have faced this type of cyberattack: In August 2014, hackers reportedly obtained and leaked intimate photos from people's Apple iCloud accounts in a massive attack that targeted everyone from Ariana Grande to Jennifer Lawrence.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lawrence later spoke out against the hackers and called for legal action. "It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime," she said. "The law needs to be changed, and we need to change."

The actress continued: "Just because I'm a public figure ... does not mean that I asked for this ... It's my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting."

Jennifer Lawrence

In many ways, these hacks are similar to revenge porn, in which someone shares sexually explicit photos or videos online without the consent of the person featured in them. So far, only thirty-eight states and Washington, DC, have laws against this type of digital harassment and violation — all of which are relatively new.

Sadly, in conversations about revenge porn or photo leaks, victims (most of whom are women) are often blamed, both subtly and overtly, for even taking the photos or videos in the first place. For the record, there's nothing wrong with taking intimate photos or videos: no one should be shamed for celebrating their own body or sexuality. And just because someone shares intimate content with you doesn't mean they give you consent to share it with anyone else.

That said, the internet is a murky place, and you never know where your social media posts — yes, even your private DMs — can end up. Since it's always better to be safe than sorry, here are a few ways you can protect yourself from hackers:

1. Double-check your storage settings on your phone.

If you have an iPhone, you may be uploading photos to your iCloud drive without knowing it. In simplest terms, iCloud is a service that automatically syncs your data and content across all your different Apple devices. If you take an intimate photo on your iPhone, and your iCloud Photo Library is turned on, that photo will be stored on your Mac or iPad as well.

To check your storage settings, go to Settings > Photos & Camera. From there, you'll have the option to enable or disable three different iCloud services. Read the descriptions of each service carefully before you choose to turn it on.

iCloud Photo Sharing Settings iPhone Apple

If you have an Android device, open your Google Photos app and tap the menu icon in the top left corner. Then, go to Settings > Back up & sync and disable the automatic backup feature.

Just to be safe, you should also access your iCloud or Google Photos account online and delete any photos you may have accidentally synced to your devices. To delete a photo or video permanently, delete it from the Camera Roll and the Recently Deleted folder on the original device.

2. Make sure your passwords are secure.

Having a long, complicated password can be annoying, but it's well worth the hassle. According to Norton, a security software provider, you should follow these golden rules for creating strong passwords:

  • First, your passwords should be at least 12 characters long.
  • They should also contain at least one uppercase letter, one number, and one symbol.
  • You should use different passwords for each online account you have.
  • You should change your passwords every 10 weeks.

3. Enable two-factor authentication on your email — and whenever you can.

In addition to creating strong passwords for your online accounts, you should also enable a two-step verification process on any service that provides it. This process requires that you verify your identity on another device, usually your phone, in addition to the one you're trying to access.

It's especially important to enable two-factor authentication on your email provider because once hackers gain access to your email, they can easily access other accounts such as Facebook or Amazon.

Google two step verification

Once you set up two-step verification on your accounts, you'll typically receive a text message on your phone that contains a random code. To access your account, just enter that code when prompted.

4. Download updates for your device as soon as they're available.

If you use an older operating system, you're more vulnerable to a cyberattack. For example, in the massive WannaCry ransomware attack earlier this year, computers operating on old Windows XP software were hit especially hard, according to chief cybersecurity research officer Mikko Hypponen.

As easy as it may be, don't ignore reminders on your phone, computer, or tablet that tell you when to update your device and download important security patches.

5. Don't open any suspicious links or emails.

If you see a strange email or attachment, even if it's from someone you know, trust your gut and leave it alone. As cyberattacks grow increasingly sophisticated, you should always veer on the side of caution.

Similarly, if you're surfing the web and come across a fishy website, don't share any of your private information. An easy way to tell whether you're on a secure site is to look for a padlock icon in the URL bar.

Green padlock chrome url secure site

The padlock indicates that traffic to and from the site is encrypted, which means no one but the site can read any sensitive information you share.

Miley Cyrus summed up her sex life in the funniest way — and couples can probably relate

Miley Cyrus Ellen

The INSIDER Summary:

  • During an appearance on Ellen, Miley Cyrus summed up her sex life with Liam Hemsworth as "fast."
  • Although she was probably joking, there are some benefits to quickies.
  • They can make you less stressed, bring you closer, and maybe even extend your life.

There are a lot of positive things that you'd want someone to say about your sex life. Complimenting your speed is probably not one of them.

But that's how Miley Cyrus chose to describe her sex life with fiancé Liam Hemsworth during an appearance on Ellen this week.

During a game called "Lady Time," host Ellen DeGeneres asked Cyrus a series of revealing multiple-choice questions from 1970's Cosmopolitan magazines. One question asked Cyrus to sum up her sex life in one of three ways: a roller-coaster ride, luxury cruise or commuter trip on a Concorde jet. She chose the last one to laughs from the audience.

"That means it’s fast," Ellen said.

"I’m good. I got to go. I’ve got an album coming out," Cyrus joked.

Although she may have been a bit modest because her grandmother was in the audience, Cyrus has a point about keeping sex short and sweet. Marathon sex sessions may be the stuff of legends, but having more quickies could actually be beneficial for your health. (Yes, seriously.)

Here are some good reasons why you and your partner should be having quickies more often:

It's a big stress reliever.

It's been said that sex is a great way to relieve stress, and a study found having sex daily for two weeks can lead to cell growth in the parts of the brain that control stress. Unfortunately, you probably don't have time to have sex every day for two weeks; that's where quickies comes in handy.

If you're having sex more often but for less times, you'll be bale to reap the stress-controlling benefits without losing too much time.

It can boost your immune system.

Having a couple quickies a week can not only make you feel good in the moment, but it may also help you feel better in the long run. Physically, that is.

A study found that having frequent sex can boost your amount of immunoglobulin A in your body, an antibody that plays a crucial role in protecting your immune system.

miley cyrus liam hemsworth

It can bring you closer together.

Studies have found that the release of oxytocin may be the reason why we feel so much closer to our partners during and after sex. So the more sex you have, the closer you'll feel, which gets even easier when you're getting it in quickly.

Besides, what bonds people faster than trying to have sex quickly in a New York City apartment's microscopic bathroom?

It can help you live longer.

A study found that people who had frequent sex actually lived longer than those who didn't. So this means no matter your age, if you want to, you should be all about the quickies for frequent and powerful sex.

Every couple has and should have their own style for getting busy. But whether you're into quickies, like apparently Miley and Liam are, or just looking to spice up your sex life, getting it done in the blink of an eye is nothing to be ashamed of, as long as everyone leaves happy.

Miley Cyrus revealed why she's not planning a wedding with Liam Hemsworth — and it makes total sense

Miley and Liam

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are engaged, but that doesn't mean they're planning a wedding.
  • Cyrus said she's too young to plan a wedding, but she and Hemsworth are happy.
  • She said that their separation helped them grow stronger.
  • Her ideas about a long engagement make total sense.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have done a pretty good job at keeping us guessing about their relationship status over the years.

They've gotten engaged, broken up several times, spent years apart, only to reveal that they're engaged again. But just because Cyrus,24, is rocking her engagement ring that Hemsworth, 27, gave her in 2012 does not mean that she's in wedding planning mode.

She told The Sun on Sunday newspaper in the UK that she just doesn't see herself getting married anytime soon.

'I don't envision marriage," she told them, according to the Daily Mail. "I'm 24. I hope I get to live a little bit more. I have too much living to do [before I get married]."

Cyrus and Hemsworth have both been open about how they feel like their years-long breakup allowed them to have a healthy relationship now. She told the paper that getting back together with Hemsworth helped her find who she truly is.

'I'm just riding this out," she told them. "In some relationships, you lose yourself by being with someone else. Actually, it made me find myself more."

But that doesn't mean she's not surprised at times by their reconciliation.

"Three years ago, if you'd asked me if I'd be here, this happy with this man, I'd have been stunned," she told The Sun.

My little angel and I.

A post shared by Liam Hemsworth (@liamhemsworth) on Jul 9, 2017 at 10:04pm PDT on

Because of their rocky history and their ages, their decision to hold off wedding planning makes sense. They live together and are clearly committed to each other, so if marriage isn't something that they want right now, it's smart to wait.

Long engagements get a bad rap as some people may see it as trouble in paradise, lack of certainty or disorganization. There's this idea that the second couples get engaged they have to jump to start planning their wedding.

While the average engagement is about 14.5 months, according to The Knot, many couples choose to hold off for a myriad of reasons. For some, a wedding is something they'll have to save up for. For others, an engagement ring is a commitment in itself and they aren't in any rush to go further. And sometimes, life just gets in the way and that wedding planning gets shelved for kids or work or life.

Every couple is different, which means engagement length is going to be different for everyone involved. The more couples like Cyrus and Hemsworth make the decisions that are right for them, the happier they'll be. But that doesn't mean that Cyrus is ruling a wedding out completely.

"I have no idea what the next three years will bring, but if it's possible to get even happier, I'll take it," she said.

Back then, she was known to rock cowboy boots with her innocent and modest outfits. But nowadays, the 24-year-old singer is known for pushing the rules of fashion.

With the release of her newest album, "Younger Now," set for Friday, the singer and NBC's "The Voice" coach has toned down her music and fashion a bit more.

  • Miley Cyrus is fit.
  • The singer builds her strength through yoga.
  • She is a fan of hiking.
  • The pop star is a dedicated vegan.

Miley Cyrus lives an incredibly active lifestyle.

The 24-year-old singer may be busy promoting her new album out Friday, singing at various events, and serving as a coach on NBC's "The Voice," but that doesn't stop her from keeping up with her regular exercises.

Here's how Cyrus stays fit and healthy.

She regularly practices Ashtanga yoga, a physically demanding yoga style that helps with core strength. Through practice and dedication, her strength and flexibility have impressively increased. The yogi often shares photos and videos of herself doing poses on her Instagram.

In March 2016, she wrote, "Gotta do yoga not for my body but for my mind! DO YOGA or GO CRAZY!"

Whether exercising with her sister Brandi Cyrus and some of their dogs or her fiancé Liam Hemsworth and some of their pets, she's often spotted out on the trails.

3. Pilates has been a big part of her life.

miley the voice

Cyrus has shown off her toned abs for years, frequenting pilates classes.

In a 2013 interview with People, LA-based pilates instructor Mari Winsor spoke about getting Cyrus in shape. The pop star was often seen leaving Winsor's pilates studio, but later installed her own studio in her home, and worked out five to six days a week.

"When we work out, we don't just do a couple of moves," Winsor said. "It’s at least a half an hour of working out…You have to learn how to not just tighten up your tummy but actually pull your tummy in to your lower back as much as you can. Just doing 40 crunches a day isn’t gonna do it for you."

4. She is a dedicated vegan.

Cyrus transitioned into a vegan lifestyle in 2014 and has stuck with it since. The singer even documented her commitment with a tattoo symbolizing veganism in 2017. She credits veganism with keeping her healthy.

"By not consuming animal products over the years I have protected myself from preventable diseases," she wrote in a photo caption in 2017.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) even made a post featuring examples of times Cyrus posted about veganism on her social pages.

5. She recently stepped away from drinking alcohol and smoking weed.

miley cyrus

Cyrus' affinity for marijuana and other drugs has been documented in the public eye for years. In a 2013 interview with Rolling Stone, Cyrus talked about her love of "happy drugs."

"I think weed is the best drug on earth," she said. "One time I smoked a joint with peyote in it, and I saw a wolf howling at the moon. Hollywood is a coke town, but weed is so much better. And molly, too. Those are happy drugs – social drugs. They make you want to be with friends."

But in a 2017 interview with Billboard, Cyrus revealed that she stepped away from the drugs and the alcohol for a time.

"I haven't smoked weed in three weeks, which is the longest I've ever [gone without it]," she said at the time. "I'm not doing drugs, I'm not drinking, I'm completely clean right now."

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were still connected in this strange way during their break up

Miley Cyrus

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Miley Cyrus said when she and Liam Hemsworth broke up in 2013, he decided to get space from her and move to Malibu.
  • Little did he know, he was moving into the house where she recorded her first album.
  • Now they live there together, and she released a single about their relationship and their time in the house called "Malibu."

Miley Cyrus's recent single "Malibu" is an ode to her beach bungalow with long-time love Liam Hemsworth. But the pair actually has a complicated history with their now-home.

When Cyrus and Hemsworth notoriously broke up in 2013, Hemsworth wanted to get away from the singer and the life they built. So he began looking for a home in Malibu, away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles.

But when he found a home he liked, it wasn't an escape from Cyrus at all. It was actually the house where she had recorded her first album, "Breakout," as Cyrus explained this week on Howard Stern's radio show.

“The person hid all the plaques in the garage so he would still buy the house,” she told Stern. “So then he went to move in and he was like 'f---! I cannot get away. This b---- is all over my f------ house!'”

My little angel and I.

Things obviously worked out for the couple who have been back together for over a year. Now, Cyrus said, it's kind of poetic they ended up living in that house together, and that she wrote such an important song about it.

"So now that we're back together, my song 'Malibu' is about the house that I live in, in Malibu, which is where I recorded my first album," Cyrus told them.
But not every song on her new album "Younger Now" was a positive take on her relationship with Hemsworth, and Cyrus said that she didn't play him the album before it was released. Cyrus admitted she was a little nervous about letting Hemsworth hear it.
"I put this dude through so much s--- ... he'll tell me something and then all of the sudden it's in one of my songs," Cyrus said. "He said he bought the album and was going to go take a shower and listen and I'm like ... maybe don't!"
Although Cyrus didn't say how Hemsworth ended up feeling about the songs after all, we can only imagine he's happy there in Malibu with her too.
