Miley Cyrus opened Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards by expressing her love of Instagram.

The 22-year-old singer, who has 27.7 million Instagram followers, told the crowd: "I took the year off to focus on my true love Instagram."

"I just find that it's a much easier way to express myself and connect with my fans," she continued. "When it comes to my posts, everyone thinks I just think of some crazy s--- and then I just post it, but it's a lot more involved than that."

Cyrus then told the crowd to "take a look at my process" and cut to a previously filmed sketch...

Miley Cyrus made her new album for just $50,000 — and that explains a lot

Miley Cyrus released a surprise album, "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz," moments after performing at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night.

The album, which was released on SoundCloud for free, is her first collection of new music since 2013's "Bangerz,"which sold more than one million units.

There's a lot to talk about with "Dead Petz"— from the subject matter and the sound to the collaborators and the release strategy. One of the most interesting stories about the album comes from Joe Coscarelli of the New York Times, whose profile of Cyrus was published hours after the VMAs.

Coscarelli reports that Cyrus recorded the album for $50,000 (millions less than "Bangerz"), and her record label wasn't involved at all.

From the Times:

She said the album cost about $50,000 to make — “Bangerz” was “a couple million” — although RCA Records, her label, did not contribute to the budget this time around. “They had never heard the record until it was done,” she said, and it won’t count toward fulfilling her multi-album contract.

That lack of financial commitment helps explain how this album — a psychedelic 23-song collaboration with Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne — saw the light of day in its current form. There are no clear radio hits or concessions to the mainstream on here. While "Bangerz" rode in on the wave of massive singles like "Wrecking Ball" and "We Can't Stop," this album got posted online around midnight and the lead single is a screechy, meandering ode to smoking weed called "Dooo It!"

"Dooo It!" is more-or-less representative of the album on the whole — a trippy, experimental mishmash of rock, pop, and hip hop that has an identifable Flaming Lips feel. You get a sense that this is Miley's "weird" album, and she knows it.

In the Times interview Cyrus says, "I literally can do whatever I want. It’s insane."

A more accurate statement might have been, "I literally can do whatever I want, as long the record label doesn't spend a penny on it and this will be clearly designated as a side project."

Making the album on the cheap and keeping it out of the official RCA succession of Miley albums lowered the stakes in a way that empowered her to make something devoid of commercial ambitions. It's a win-win for everyone — Miley got to go nuts on her passion project without any pressure to move units, and her label still has her locked up for what will ostensibly be more mainsteam albums down the road.

The Times used the word "homemade" to describe the nature of the album. Others have pointed out that this is very much not "Bangerz":

"Dead Petz" is not meant for mass commercial consumption in the way the last album was, because Miley set up a scenario where it didn't have to be.

Nicki Minaj just burned Miley Cyrus again after their blow up at the VMAs

nicki minaj miley cyrus fight vmas

Just after Nicki Minaj went off on Miley Cyrus onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards, some viewers thought it was fake. But, the rapper spoke about it to the New York Times and it sure feels very real to her.

Minaj says she blew her lid when she was accepting the award for Best Hip Hop video and caught a glance of the show's host, Cyrus.

‘‘I saw [Cyrus] just looking at me, with her face screwed up, and I thought, What the!’’ Minaj told The Times.

To recap: In a series of July tweets, Minaj insinuated that her lack of inclusion in the category's nominees involved racism, because "'other' girls" who break records and have an impact on culture get nominated. She also felt that being body positive about curvy, more ethnic bodies vs. slim bodies affected her chances of being nominated. It turned out Swift felt Minaj's tweets were targeting her and lashed back at the rapper. They soon patched it up with Swift apologizing. They even performed together at the VMAs.

But while Swift was safe, Cyrus wasn't. The singer told The Times that Minaj's comments lacked an "open heart" and came off "not very polite" and "not too kind."

So, Minaj took the opportunity onstage to address Cyrus.

"Now, back to this b---h that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press," Minaj said. "Miley, what's good?"

Cyrus responded: "Hey, we're all in this industry. We all do interviews, and we all know how they manipulate. Nicki, congratulations."

A month or so later, Minaj was still bothered by Cyrus' comments.

‘‘The fact that you feel upset about me speaking on something that affects black women makes me feel like you have some big balls," Minaj said. "You’re in videos with black men, and you’re bringing out black women on your stages, but you don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important? Come on, you can’t want the good without the bad. If you want to enjoy our culture and our lifestyle, bond with us, dance with us, have fun with us, twerk with us, rap with us, then you should also want to know what affects us, what is bothering us, what we feel is unfair to us. You shouldn’t not want to know that.’’

Business Insider has reached out to Cyrus's representatives for comment.

Pop singer Miley Cyrus will star in the original television show that famed director Woody Allen is writing and producing for Amazon, Deadline reveals

The ecommerce company signed on Allen last January to write a show about whatever he wanted.

Although Allen confessed to struggling with ideas back in May, causing him to regret his decision to sign on with Amazon, he now plans to begin shooting a 1960s-rooted show starring Cyrus and Elaine May in March.

Although Amazon has released a handful of original television shows, its two biggest have been "Transparent" and "Mozart in the Jungle," both of which won Golden Globes. Cyrus' high-profile hire can't promise anything about the quality of Allen's show, though it will likely help attract eyeballs.

Amazon uses its TV and movie streaming service to help drive sign-ups and renewals for its Prime shopping subscription program. The company spent an estimated $3 billion last year on its streaming music and video services.

In other Amazon streaming news: The company just bought distribution rights for the drama "Manchester By The Sea." Sources tell The Wall Street Journal that it paid a $10 million for the film, which stars Casey Affleck.

Alicia Keys is making history on "The Voice," and she's staying true to her makeup-free stance.

Keys — who joins Miley Cyrus as the first two female coaches simultaneously appearing on the show — has famously been makeup-free since May 2016.

The Grammy-award winning artist penned an essay in Lena Dunham's Lenny Letter explaining why she chose to go sans makeup.

She wrote that she had begun to conceal herself behind the makeup and felt that women were judging each other based on physical appearances. She began to write songs that reflected these ideas.

"Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn't put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it???" she wrote. "These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me."

the voice judges season 11While these thoughts had been manifesting, her decision to embrace no makeup came after meeting photographer Paola Kudacki.

Keys had arrived at the photoshoot fresh from the gym when Kudacki told her she needed to take the photos right away, because Keys appeared "raw," just like her songs.

"It was just a plain white background, me and the photographer intimately relating, me and that baseball hat and scarf and a bunch of invisible magic circulating," Keys wrote. "And I swear it is the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt."

The photo was used as the official artwork for Keys' song "In Common," and after that, she fully embraced the #nomakeup lifestyle.

"I hope to God it's a revolution. 'Cause I don't want to cover up anymore," Keys wrote. "Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing."

Other celebrities such as Adele and Mila Kunis have also publicly embraced the makeup-free look.

Catch Keys on "The Voice" when season 11 premieres September 19 on NBC.

Miley Cyrus

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Miley Cyrus is taking issue with the CW series, "Supergirl," because she says having a show with a gender attached to it is "weird."

The pop singer tells Variety the actress who plays the title character, Melissa Benoist, is a woman, "not a little girl." She also questions "what if you're a little boy who wants to be a girl so bad that this makes you feel bad"

Entertainment Weekly reports "Supergirl" executive producer Andrew Kreisberg responded Tuesday that he stands by the show. He says since it was based on a pre-existing property called "Supergirl," there was never any intention of calling it anything but that.

Kreisberg says they worked hard during the show's first season to address the discrepancy between the title and the character's age.

Cyrus also revealed to Variety that she identifies as pansexual, open to all sexual orientations or gender identities.

It’s also not the first time the singer has gotten a tattoo for a furry friend. After her Alaskan Klee Kai Floyd was killed by a coyote in 2014, Cyrus got a rib tattoo to commemorate.

And in fact, her sheltie Emu was adopted after Floyd’s death. At the time, Cyrus wrote in an Instagram caption: “Never will I replace Floyd and that’s something I had to take time to understand. we had a very special memorial service for Floyd and I felt my angel Floydy give Emu his blessing. I prayed to Floyd to just give him a touch of his awesomeness and he has.”

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Miley Cyrus just released a new song, "Malibu."
  • The singer shows off a new laid-back look and style in the song's music video.
  • "Malibu" appears inspired by her rekindled relationship with Liam Hemsworth.
  • The single is the first song off of a coming, yet-untitled album from Cyrus.

It looks like the days of wearing head-turning, skin-bearing outfits could be over for Miley Cyrus.

Cyrus is back, and the 24-year-old singer just released the music video for her first new song in two years, and in it she shows off a much tamer persona than the one audiences have grown accustomed to in recent years.

miley cyrus craziest looks

The new tune is called "Malibu," from Cyrus' coming sixth studio album, and it shows a raw, fresh-faced Cyrus smiling, walking with balloons down the beach, and just looking happy while singing about love.

It's a different sound and look from the singer's recent work, the psychedelic and experimental free album "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz" from 2015 and 2013's "Bangerz," which gave us the hit "Wrecking Ball."

miley cyrus wrecking ball

"Malibu" is even sweeter when you know the meaning behind the song. It's extremely personal and inspired by her rekindled romance with fiancé Liam Hemsworth ("The Hunger Games"), according to a new cover story in Billboard. The two called off their engagement in August 2013 after dating for nearly four years. In October 2016, the singer confirmed their engagement was back on three years later after the two were spotted hanging out together and Cyrus started wearing an engagement ring again.

miley cyrus liam hemsworth

One of the lyrics in her new song?

"I never would have believed you if three years ago you'd told me I'd be here writing this song, but here I am, next to you. The sky's so blue in Malibu. Next to you in Malibu."

After Cyrus sings the words "writing this song" the music video cuts to a shot that's focused on the singer's left hand, which is adorned with tiny flowers and an engagement ring.

Take a listen to the lyrics at the 2:03 mark in "Malibu."

But why Malibu?

That's where Cyrus lives with her fiancé and seven dogs, two pigs, and miniature horses. The Malibu ranch cost an estimated $2.5 million.

Cyrus says she wrote the song on her way to "The Voice," where she joined the competition show as a judge in season 11.

And it seems as if her new sound isn't the only big change Cyrus is making.

She told Billboard she recently stopped smoking weed to surround herself with people who make her "want to get better, more evolved, open."

"And I was noticing, it's not the people that are stoned," Cyrus said. "I want to be super clear and sharp, because I know exactly where I want to be."

We can't wait more to hear more from her new, still-untitled album. Check out the official video for "Malibu" below.

Miley Cyrus is finally responding to backlash over her controversial comments about hip hop

miley cyrusThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Miley Cyrus is getting flak for her comments about hip hop in a recent interview.
  • She criticized some rappers in the industry for their lyrics.
  • Twitter was not happy with her words and called her a hypocrite and appropriator.

Oh, Miley. With new music on the way, the 24-year-old songstress is gearing up for its impending release with plenty of publicity. Unfortunately, it hasn’t all been the good kind. While Cyrus has been busy explaining what her new sound will be like and exactly what happened with her on-again fiancé Liam Hemsworth, the “We Can’t Stop” singer is getting plenty of flack for several comments she made about the hip-hop genre in a recent interview with Billboard.

In the piece, she spoke about how she was moving away from her “Hip-Hop” vibe and into new musical territory. That’s when things took a turn. While she admitted to loving Kendrick Lamar’s new single, “Humble,” the chanteuse also lambasted other rappers in the industry for their lyrics, saying, “I love [Lamar’s song] because it’s not ‘Come sit on my d–k, suck on my c–k.’ I can’t listen to that anymore. That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much ‘Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my c–k’ — I am so not that.”

Fans are not taking her words lightly.

Many on Twitter felt that she used hip hop music and culture to her advantage to further her fame, then dismissed it in a move they thought reeked of cultural appropriation, dragging her accordingly on social media.

Cyrus has now responded to those with ruffled feathers with an Instagram post meant to clarify her words.

When articles are read it isn't always considered that for hours I've spoken with a journalist about my life , where my heart is, my perspective at that time, and the next step in my career. Unfortunately only a portion of that interview makes it to print, & A lot of the time publications like to focus on the most sensationalized part of the conversation. So, to be clear I respect ALL artists who speak their truth and appreciate ALL genres of music (country , pop , alternative .... but in this particular interview I was asked about rap) I have always and will continue to love and celebrate hip hop as I've collaborated with some of the very best! At this point in my life I am expanding personally/musically and gravitating more towards uplifting, conscious rap! As I get older I understand the effect music has on the world & Seeing where we are today I feel the younger generation needs to hear positive powerful lyrics! I am proud to be an artist with out borders and thankful for the opportunity to explore so many different styles/ sounds! I hope my words (sung or spoken) always encourage others to LOVE.... Laugh.... Live fully.... to be there for one another... to unify, and to fight for what's right (human , animal , or environmental ) Sending peace to all! Look forward to sharing my new tunes with you soon! - MC

While it’s unclear how her apology will play out, one thing’s for sure: Things are just getting started for Cyrus in her new journey.

  • Miley Cyrus revealed that she regrets her infamous "Wrecking Ball" video in a recent interview.
  • The singer didn't realize that the video would become a sensation, especially as a meme

Miley Cyrus is embracing an entirely new side as she continues her very public transformation from music industry wild child into a much more toned-down version of herself. Turning her back on her hip hop beginnings with controversial comments was apparently only the beginning. Now, she’s revealed why she regrets her infamous “Wrecking Ball” video.

“It’s kinda crazy that I’ll always be known for licking a sledgehammer,” the 24-year-old explained, according to ET, while promoting her new music on Long Island’s "Cooper Lawrence" morning show. And while we can’t deny that the sledgehammer thing was hella cheeky, we’d have to say her ride on the giant wrecking ball back in 2013 was even more memorable and oh-so meme-worthy.

Either way, the video — and the song — is something that the singer would rather put behind her. When it comes to performing the tune itself, Cyrus told WKTU’s "Cubby and Carolina Bermudez" radio show, “I’ll do it, but I don’t love it.”

Despite the star’s own feelings, with almost 900 million views on YouTube, it doesn’t look like “Wrecking Ball” will be forgotten any time soon.

Singer Miley Cyrus, who is one of Grande's close friends, wrote a heartfelt Instagram post to address the tragedy.

"I love, appreciate, and celebrate you,"she concluded

Grande herself has also addressed the attack, albeit briefly, writing on Twitter that she is "broken."

Her manager, Scooter Braun, also released a statement, writing, "We mourn the lives of children and loved ones taken by this cowardly act. We are thankful for the selfless service tonight of Manchester's first responders who rushed towards danger to help save lives."

Katy Perry

It's June, which pretty much means it's summer. It's time to listen to beach-appropriate songs that will never get out of your head no matter how hard you try.

The past few years have given us some of the most memorable songs of summer for good and bad reasons: "Call Me Maybe,""Blurred Lines,""Trap Queen."

Spotify put together a playlist of what it predicts will be the songs of summer for 2017, and there's something for every summer occasion. While most of them aren't as horribly catchy as "Blurred Lines," there are songs from artists including Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Niall from One Direction, Liam from One Direction, and Katy Perry.

Here are Spotify's picks for the songs of summer 2017, which you can listen to below:

“Bad Liar” - Selena Gomez

Spotify: "Between the playful coos and seductive beat, Selena Gomez’s brand new song has us all hot and bothered. Spotify listeners took to this track instantly and we predict it’ll be setting the tone for summertime shenanigans everywhere."

“Strip That Down” - Liam Payne ft. Quavo

"Liam Payne’s first post 1D solo offering references everything summer needs: beverages (“Coke and Bacardi”), fast cars (“F1 type Ferrari”) and suggestive dancing (“I love it when your body grinds on me”). Co-written by Ed Sheeran, this track is already the life of the party. "

“I'm The One” - DJ Khaled ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper, Lil Wayne

"If you’re looking to kick back beside the pool with a drink in hand and a mission to be worry-free, this is your song. Led by the charismatic DJ Khaled, “I’m The One” is a sunny all-star collaboration about telling a girl she can call off the search for Mr. Right."
