POLL: Americans Have Very Mixed Feelings About 2013

Miley Cyrus AMAWASHINGTON (AP) — Ready to ring in the new year, Americans look ahead with optimism, according to a new AP-Times Square New Year's Eve poll. Their ratings of the year gone by? Less than glowing.

What the public thought of 2013: good year or good riddance?

On the whole, Americans rate their own experience in 2013 more positively than negatively, but when asked to assess the year for the United States or the world at large, things turn sour.

—All told, 32 percent say 2013 was a better year for them than 2012, while 20 percent say it was worse and 46 percent say the two years were really about the same. Young people were more apt to see improvement: 40 percent of people under age 30 called 2013 a better year than 2012, compared with 25 percent of people age 65 or older.

—The public splits evenly on how the year turned out for the country, 25 percent saying it was better than 2012, 25 percent saying it was worse. As with most questions about the state of affairs in the U.S. these days, there's a sharp partisan divide. Democrats are more apt to say the U.S. turned out better in 2013 than 2012 (37 percent) than are Republicans (17 percent).

—Thinking about the world at large, 30 percent say 2013 was worse than 2012, while just 20 percent say it was better.

But the outlook for the new year is positive: 49 percent think their own fortunes will improve in 2014, 14 percent are anticipating the new year to be a downgrade from the old. Thirty-four percent say they don't expect much to change.

Where's the party?

Most Americans — 54 percent — say they'll be ringing in the new year at home, while 1 in 5 are heading to a friend's or family member's house. Only 8 percent say they'll go to a bar, restaurant or other organized event.

—Younger Americans are least apt to spend the holiday at home: 39 percent of those under age 30 will celebrate at home, 33 percent at someone else's home, 13 percent at a bar or other venue.

—Regardless of their own time zone, nearly 6 in 10 say they'll watch at least some of the celebration from New York City's Times Square.

Countdown companions

Wherever they're spending the holiday, most Americans prefer the company of family. Asked with whom they want to be when the clock strikes midnight, 83 percent name a family member.

—On a holiday often sealed with a kiss, nearly 4 in 10 say they most want to be next to their spouse, and 13 percent cite a significant other or romantic interest as a preferred companion. Parents like to be with their children, more than the children like to be with their parents.

—Less conventional choices: 2 percent cite their pets, 3 percent God, Jesus or their religious congregation, and less than 1 percent said they wanted to ring it in with their co-workers.

—Of course, some opt out altogether: 18 percent say they're not planning to celebrate on New Year's Eve, and 9 percent say there's no one with whom they'd like to party, preferring instead their pillow, TiVo or their own thoughts.

What mattered in the news

The implementation of the health care law topped the list of the most important news stories of 2013, with 26 percent citing it. In an Associated Press survey of news directors and editors, 45 of 144 journalists surveyed called the health care rollout their top story.

In the AP-Times Square poll, the death of Nelson Mandela occurred as the poll was underway. It rose quickly, with 8 percent naming it as the most important news of the year, matching the share citing the federal government's budget difficulties or shutdown.

The budget fight, which led to a partial shutdown of the federal government in October, was rated extremely or very important by 60 percent of Americans, and prompted rare bipartisan agreement. About two-thirds in each major party, 65 percent of Republicans and 63 percent of Democrats, rated it highly important.

A majority said the Boston Marathon bombings were extremely or very important, and 47 percent considered the national debate over gun laws that important.

Pop culture: mostly forgettable moments

Miley Cyrus's MTV Video Music Awards performance. The launch of "Lean In." Apologies from Paula Deen and Lance Armstrong. Walter White's exit and the entrance of the Netflix series "House of Cards." What do they all have in common? More Americans say these pop culture moments were more forgettable than memorable.

Just one pop culture moment was deemed more memorable than forgettable: The birth of Prince George to Britain's Prince William and his wife, Kate.

—Among men, 64 percent called the debate on work-life balance sparked by the book "Lean In" and other writings forgettable. About half of women agreed.

—About 1 in 5 younger Americans said the launch of original programming through streaming services like Netflix or Hulu was a memorable moment, about doubling the share among those age 50 and up.

—Residents of the West were more likely than others to consider memorable the San Francisco "Batkid" (31 percent) or the final season of the series "Breaking Bad" (19 percent).

The AP-Times Square New Year's Eve Poll was conducted by GfK Public Affairs and Corporate Communications from Dec. 5-9 and involved online interviews with 1,367 adults. The survey has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for all respondents. The poll is a cooperative effort between AP and the organizers of the Times Square New Year's Eve Celebration, the Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment. The Alliance is a non-profit group that seeks to promote Times Square, and Countdown Entertainment represents the owners of One Times Square and the New Year's Eve Ball Drop.

The survey was conducted using KnowledgePanel, a probability-based Internet panel designed to be representative of the U.S. population. Respondents to the survey were first selected randomly, using phone or mail survey methods, and were later interviewed online. People selected for KnowledgePanel who didn't otherwise have access to the Internet were provided with the ability to access the Internet at no cost to them.

A Scientist Made An Incredible 'Wrecking Ball' Parody About Evolution

wrecking ball carin bondar evolution music video parody

Dr. Carin Bondar calls herself "a biologist with a twist." That, my friends, is true.

The edgy scientist has appeared on Discovery's "Brave New World with Stephen Hawking" and hosts a YouTube series documenting animals' sexual behavior called "Wild Sex." Now she has released a cover of Miley Cyrus' mega-hit "Wrecking Ball" that pokes fun at creationism.

Bondar explains her motivation for writing the song on the video's page: "I am always troubled by the lack of awareness surrounding the process of evolution by natural selection. Also, I am a crazy dorky scientist who enjoys many aspects of pop culture."

The result is the hysterical video below, titled "Organisms Do Evolve."

In the video, Bondar reads Charles Darwin's "The Origin of Species" while writhing on a pile of science textbooks and licking a sledgehammer (of course).

The video was posted only four days ago and already has more than 266,000 views.

You can follow along with the lyrics on Bondar's YouTube channel.

Watch What Happens When The Yellow M&M Tries To Twerk In This Super Bowl Teaser

M&M's is putting its Yellow character, mascot for the brand's peanut M&M's, front and center at this year's Super Bowl.

In a teaser video for an ad at this year's game, the Yellow M&M is seen twerking on-camera when he is hit with a tranquilizer dart.

The Yellow M&M then crumples to the ground and is dragged off-screen by an unseen, off-camera character. Viewers are told they can find out what happens to Yellow next on Feb. 2, the date of this year's Super Bowl.

In making the teaser, M&M's could be attempting to tap into the pop culture phenomenon of "twerking," a dance marked by frequent butt-shaking that reached the mainstream when singer Miley Cyrus did it in a salacious performance at MTV's Video Music Awards in August.

M&M's will carry this narrative into its 30-second Super Bowl ad, which will be created by its ad agency, BBDO New York.

Skidmore College, ranked by CBS News as one of the nation’s most expensive private colleges in the country, is now officially offering a course on Miley Cyrus: “The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender, and Media.”

The 2014 summer course will be taught by assistant visiting professor of Sociology Carolyn Chernoff, Complex reports.

“I am interested in cities, arts, and social change, particularly on the level of social interaction and the production of ‘community,’” Chernoff’s professional bio reads on the school’s website. ”I investigate the role of culture in reproducing and transforming social inequality, and research conflict around diversity and difference.”

The course description summarizes a learning experience that “uses Miley Cyrus as a lens through which students can explore themes about race, gender, and identity in the media.”

The class will cover topics such as the rise of the disney princess, gender stratification, the hyper-commodification of childhood, transitioning to adulthood, what happens to Disney stars as they age, and a discussion on bisexuality, queerness, and the female body, according to the course description.

Skidmore is not the only institution of higher learning to use female pop culture figures as topics of study. Rutger’s University also recently received media attention after the school posted class openings for a course called “Politicizing Beyoncé,” a class that identifies and investigates many of the same core themes advertised in Chernoff’s ‘Miley 101′ class.

A Teen Magazine Put Miley Cyrus On Its May Cover Without Her Permission

miley cyrus

Miley Cyrus is on the cover of the May issue of Elle, but she’s also on the cover of another popular magazine and this one was published without her approval.

Miley Cyrus is on the cover of Seventeenand reportedly the magazine did not have the go ahead from Cyrus or her team.

But Seventeen just had to have their Miley, so they printed the cover with a stock photo and a caption that reads, “100% Confident Miley! The Brave Way She’s Winning Over Everyone — Even Her Haters!”

The inside of the magazine contains a write-around in lieu of an actual new interview which was also not approved by Cyrus.

Women’s Wear Dailyspoke with a source close to Cyrus who says, “She’s very, very selective when it comes to magazine covers. Miley declined Seventeen and denied being a part of it, completely.”

Elle and Seventeen are both owned by Hearst Magazines and it’s no surprise that with her pick of the two, Cyrus went with Elle. Her whole deal is doing everything she can to prove that she’s not a kid anymore. She’s a grown ass woman that can shake her grown ass on stage in leotards and white cowboy boots, okay?! Being on the cover of Seventeen magazine goes against all of that. Just look at the happy-go-lucky photo they chose for Seventeen, versus this emotionally riveting one from Elle.

miley cyrus covers

Way to kill her vibe, Seventeen. If she doesn’t want to be featured, then listen to her wishes. Oh yeah… money is involved and Cyrus sells magazines. Nevermind.

A spokesperson for Seventeen said, "Seventeen readers love Miley Cyrus, and we cover her every chance we get. She ranked high on the March issue’s Girl Power List. Our readers asked for more, so we responded as quickly as possible. Miley’s currently on tour promoting ‘Bangerz,’ so what better time than now to celebrate her and give our readers what they want."

She’s “currently on tour” really means, “She’s currently on tour so she might not notice that we put her on the cover against her wishes.”

Looky here, Seventeen. Miley Cyrus is not a kid anymore and she doesn’t want to be a part of your shenanigans. Does she have to print out giant banner about it?!

The highly-anticipated — and highly salacious — “Anaconda” video earned 19.6 million views in the 24 hours following its midnight Aug. 19 Vevo premiere, the best-ever for the music video site.

In doing so, Minaj bested Miley Cyrus, whose “Wrecking Ball” music video set the previous Vevo record of 19.3 million views in September 2013.

At last year's MTV Video Music Awards, a nearly naked Miley Cyrus twerked on top of Robin Thicke. miley cyrus robin thickeThis year, a fully clothed Cyrus sat on the sidelines and let a young homeless man named Jesse do the talking on her behalf.

But after the singer won Video of the Year for "Wrecking Ball," Jesse — a representative from the shelter My Friend's Place took the stage and explained:

“I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost, and scared for their lives. I know this because I'm one of these people. Though I may have been invisible to you in the streets, I have the same dreams as many of you.”

6 Things You Didn't See On-Camera At The MTV VMAs

beyonce red carpet vmas fansNicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, Usher and Beyonce were among the performers that graced the MTV Video Music Awards stage on Saturday from The Forum in Inglewood, Calif.

TheWrap was there, too, in the audience to give you the inside take on the show. From the clockwork timing of the production crews to the crabby audience wrangler and Beyonce's pre-performance backstage party.

Braving the traffic, California's summer heat and the impossible parking, here are six things you didn't see on TV during the MTV VMAs.

1. IT TAKES A VILLAGE
With TV magic, the home audience doesn't see the dozens and dozens of production people that have to change over a stage in just minutes. At times, awards were being presented on the right side of the stage while the crew was assembling pretty incredible sets on the left with no cover.Taylor Swift MTV VMAs performance

2. PIT KEEPER WAS A JERK
All those people in the pit that help bring energy to the show have to stand for the duration of the event. In many ways, they portray the perfect audience — dancing, singing, raising their swaying arms for slow songs. They deserve our respect, right? Well, the guy who has to direct this crowd when the stage is changing didn't show them much respect. The tone in which he spoke to the pit dancers pretty mean. Clearly, there's a danger when dealing with such a big group of people. Earlier, he had to slow them down from approaching the stage after a change and they rushed so fast that it looked like a stampede. He has to be careful. But, still, he barked orders at them as if they were completely dumb. He could have at least said please.jennifer lopez mtv vmas pit

3. KEEPIN' IT ROCKIN'
Your heard him throughout the show as it went in and out of commercials. We in the audience were able to hear him spin some pretty great songs and mixes we've heard. His name is DJ Mustard and we thank you.DJ MUSTARD MTV VMAs

4. BOOING A HOMELESS GUY?
So, Miley Cyrus decided to use her big Video of the Year award win to spread some information about homeless in L.A. What they didn't show on the West Coast airing was a pretty big group of morons began booing him, especially after he urged people to visit Cyrus's website to find out.miley cyrus homeless guy jesse

5. THE PRESENTERS DIDN'T REALLY WALK UP THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE
Before the cameras roll, a production person places the presenters at a certain spot on the spiral. When the show returns, they walk up as if finishing the trip up the spiral to the stage.OITNB VMAS

6. BEYONCÉ'S BACKSTAGE PARTY
Before Queen Bey hit the stage, the party had already started behind it. Dozens of dancers were hopping into the air, gyrating and laughing in the minutes leading to B's finale performance. Then, the lady of the hour arrived and she instantly joined her dancers in partying. As they partied, the crowd grew impatient. It began chanting her name.beyonce mtv vmas

Miley Cyrus' VMA Stunt Has Raised A Ton Of Money For Charity Since The Show

For two years running now, the post-VMAs story that has continued to hold people’s attention has been instigated by one Miley Cyrus.

But while last year, Cyrus’s on-stage antics had the nation semi-scandalized, as footage of her twerking upon Robin Thicke played on a loop on seemingly every network for days, this year, the post-game discussion is . . . well, it’s of a very different nature.

Cyrus had Jesse Helt, a 22-year-old homeless man, accept her Video Music Award prize, for video of the year, on Sunday night.miley cyrus homeless guy jesse

Helt said he was accepting the award “on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost, and scared for their lives right now,” while Cyrus watched on, tearfully, from the front row of the audience.miley cyrus crying mtv vmas

Helt directed fans to Cyrus’s Facebook page where there was information for donating to My Friend's Place, a Los Angeles organization that, per The New York Times, “helps homeless people from the ages of 12 to 25 find housing, jobs, health care and schooling.” Cyrus then spent the rest of the evening with Helt, Instagramming a shot of them at In-N-Out after the show, writing “me and my hero at in n out celebratin.”miley cyrus in n out burger

According to Mashable, Cyrus’s rep said that MTV was not aware of Cyrus’s plans in advance of the evening, and My Friend’s Place said they similarly did not know what Cyrus was planning.

According to The New York Times, Cyrus had, by Monday afternoon, raised more than $200,000 via her Facebook page for the organization. (People who donate before September 21 are entered in a lottery, the prize being a chance to hang out with Cyrus in Rio de Janeiro when she is there on her Bangerz tour.) “Now is just the beginning for me,” Cyrus said in a video released after the V.M.A.s. “We gotta start somewhere.”

According to the executive director of My Friend’s Place, Cyrus met Helt last Tuesday at the center. She bought him the suit and dress shirt he wore to the ceremony, and she put him up in the hotel he stayed at over the weekend. She also paid for him to return to Salem, Oregon, to spend time with his family following the VMAs. Cyrus told Ryan Seacrest Monday that Helt—who sat next to her during the telecast—was mistaken for her boyfriend several times at the show.

Singer Jessie J: Writing 'Party In The USA' Paid My Rent For Years

$

Jessie J

Singer Jessie J may have radio hits like "Domino" and "Bang Bang" on her resumé, but the 26-year-old didn't start out in the spotlight.

Instead, the London-born Jessie J began her career writing songs for stars such as Chris Brown, "American Idol" winner Lisa Lowes, and Miley Cyrus.

In 2009, she was responsible for writing Cyrus' No. 1 hit "Party in the U.S.A."

"You’ve got to write songs, that’s where the money is, being an artist. 'Party In the U.S.A' paid my rent for, like, three years," she recently told Glamour UK. "Actually, it was longer than that. That’s where I get most of my money. I write songs. I’m a singer. I love doing endorsements and stuff, but that’s all added on."

The singer explained further in a 2011 interview with RWD magazine: "You know what's more weird though, is that you're not actually there when they record it," she explained of the process. "I recorded 'Party In The U.S.A.,' played it for the label but they didn't think it was right for me. So they pitched it and two weeks later it was number one in six countries."

"Party in the U.S.A." became the sixth-best-selling digital single of 2009 and is one of the best-selling singles in history. As of 2012, it was Hollywood Records' fastest and best-selling single to date, selling 6 million copies worldwide.

miley cyrus party in the usa gif

Although "Party in the U.S.A." wasn't exactly the sound Miley Cyrus was going for at the time post-"Hannah Montana," the singer previously told V Magazine that she never regretted recording it.

"I can never say that I don't love 'Party in the U.S.A.' and that I'm not appreciative of it," Cyrus said. "It would like my dad saying that he hated 'Achy Breaky.' It's what gives you everything that you have. I would never take it back."

While it's impossible to know exactly what Jessie J earned for writing the song — between sales, downloads, streams, radio spins, and licenses to TV, films, and advertisements  Quora user Mike Podwall, who used to work for a Music Publishing company and negotiated deals on behalf of writers, explains:

In simple terms, songwriters make money in three ways: Mechanical Royalties (album sales and digital downloads), Performance Royalties (radio play) and Synchronization Royalties (licensing to TV, Films, Ads).  There are other revenue streams--especially with the advent of Internet streaming services--but these three represent the lion's share.

Beats knew Miley Cyrus' twerk was going to happen weeks before the VMAs aired

miley cyrus twerk

Beats and its advertising agency R/GA knew Miley Cyrus was going to have her famous "twerk" moment, grinding up to Robin Thicke during his rendition of "Blurred Lines" during the 2013 VMAs, two weeks before the awards ceremony actually aired.

In those two weeks, R/GA turned around an ad to appear right after the now-infamous twerk, which featured its "Pill" stereo speaker characters chilling on the sofa and mouthing off about Cyrus' "flat ass" and making references to Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back." It was pretty risque — one of the characters exclaimed "pleeeeassee feed Miley Cyrus"— but, nevertheless, it still aired on TV in the first commercial break after Thicke and Cyrus performed.

Here's the ad:

How was Beats and its agency able to achieve this? Well, in advertising, it pays to have contacts. And Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine is probably the most powerful man in the music industry.

Speaking at Advertising Week Europe in London on Thursday, R/GA's vice president and executive creative director, James Temple, explained how the agency and Beats are able to "create content at the speed of culture."

In the case of the Cyrus ad: "Robin Thicke has relationships with [Iovine's record label] Interscope and Miley is also from that stable of talent. So while these things have a level of secrecy, we have exposure to things that you wouldn't through a normal media buy, which gives us an advantage."

He added: "And that's the whole point: We don't exist around what's available to the media agency."

Another case in point was The Black Eyed Peas' performance at the 2011 Super Bowl half-time show. The Black Eyed Peas also have a relationship with Interscope.

Temple told the story: "They knew that there's a [camera] shot from the blimp [flying above the stadium] down to the stage. And the stage was a circle, which is a neat little pattern to stick a 'B' on it. So every time there was a shot from the blimp, it happened to be a Beats logo. So there they were ambushing the half-time show. An ad block like that during the half-time show would cost at least $4 million to $6 million for 30-seconds — but Beats got minutes-worth for nothing. And that's all because Will.i.am is part of the family."

Here's the Black Eyed Peas performing on their B-shaped stage at the 2011 Super Bowl.

Temple summarized: "We're very shrewd about working with moments and how you work outside the media buy and concept around it."

NOW WATCH: Here's what Rio looks like 500 days before the 2016 Olympics

It's hard not to adore Anne Hathaway after watching her perform 'Wrecking Ball'

$

Anne Hathaway is back, and she came in like a wrecking ball.

In Thursday's episode of Spike TV's "Lip Sync Battle," Hathaway faced Emily Blunt, her costar in "The Devil Wears Prada," in a performance of Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" that came across as effortlessly fun and carefree.

This is not what people are used to from Hathaway, who in 2013 accepted the Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in "Les Miserables" and stood on stage and softly said "it came true" (a possible reference to the Les Mis song "I Dreamed a Dream") to seemingly no one but herself and the gold statue.

It Came True

After that, it was hard to visit any website without finding a post about Hathaway. Though she is a wildly successful actress, the running theme of that spring seemed to be contrasting her with Jennifer Lawrence, who was somewhat of an "America's sweetheart" after her breakout in "The Hunger Games."

Google the sentence "Why does everyone hate Anne Hathaway" and you get page after page of posts and essays on the topic, including a piece published in The New York Times in April 2013 titled "Do We Really Hate Anne Hathaway?"

From that article:

"It's not really Anne Hathaway I 'hate,'" said Sarah Nicole Prickett, a writer for Vice and The New Inquiry, a culture and commentary site. "It's all the lesser, real-life Anne Hathaways I have known — princessy, theater-schooled girls who have no game and no sex appeal and eat raisins for dessert."

Ever since, Hathaway has been on a quiet mission to change the narrative that was being constructed for her by the public. And Thursday night, just a little over two years after that article was published, Hathaway took the stage with "Lip Sync Battle" host LL Cool J to mouth along the words to Mary J. Blige's "Love."

This is not the same Hathaway everyone was hating on in 2013.

Anne 11

Her carefree, fun-loving attitude was a 180-degree shift from her persona. She looked like the kind of girl you want to invite to your next karaoke party because she'd help the shy guests feel comfortable enough to get up and sing.

This is an Anne Hathaway you enjoy watching, and not just for mean tweet fodder.

Even Chrissy Teigen enjoyed it.

Anne 3

Then Emily Blunt fought back with her lip-sync rendition of Blackstreet's "No Diggity."

Anne watched from the sidelines. So charming!

Anne 10

Blunt gave Hathaway a run for her money. Anne even ran up on stage to "Kanye" Blunt as she was talking to LL Cool J (as if you could forget West's run-in with Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs). And it was funny, for a joke that's nearly six years old.

Anne 6

Then came round two, where Blunt gave a rousing performance of Janis Joplin's "Piece of my Heart."

But it was nothing compared with what Hathaway had in store.

Anne 8

The crowd absolutely lost it. It was a risk! Two years ago, we would have probably hated it. It would have been too theatrical, or too try-hard, or simply, just too much.

But inexplicably, it was a perfect move for Hathaway, who seems to have played a very active role in turning her reputation around.

Anne 9

Hathaway won Thursday night's episode of "Lip Sync Battle," and more importantly, she might have also won back all of our hearts.

Tracy Morgan is making a return to his former stomping grounds, "Saturday Night Live."

The actor and comedian will host the October 17 episode, NBC announced via press release on Monday.

The comic also took to Twitter to express his happiness.

Morgan was badly injured in a 2014 accident after a Wal-Mart truck hit the comedian's limo. Comic James “Jimmy Mack” McNair was killed as a result.

Just a week ago, The National Transportation Safety Board backed Morgan and said the deadly highway crash was the fault of the sleep-deprived Wal-Mart truck driver, according to Deadline.

In May, Wal-Mart and Morgan reached an agreement to settle the actor's civil lawsuit against the retail store chain. The terms of the proposed settlement were not disclosed.

This will be Tracy Morgan's first performance on TV since the accident and his second time as "SNL's" host. Morgan spent seven seasons on the NBC sketch show and was Emmy-nominated for his role on the award-winning comedy series “30 Rock.”

In June, Morgan appeared on NBC's "Today" to speak about the deadly accident for the first time.

Additionally, pop singer Miley Cyrus will kick off the season in her third time as host on Oct. 3.

Then, comedienne and actress Amy Schumer has been tapped to host for the first time on October 10.

nicki minaj miley cyrus feud mtv vmas

Nicki Minaj isn't one to let bygones be bygones.

The rapper showed that during Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards when she lashed out at host Miley Cyrus.

After accepting her win for best hip-hop video for "Anaconda" (including a shout-out to her pastor), Minaj switched gears.

"Now, back to this b---h that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press," Minaj said. "Miley, what's good?"

Then Cyrus responded: "Hey, we're all in this industry. We all do interviews, and we all know how they manipulate. Nicki, congratulations."

Earlier this week, Cyrus weighed in on Minaj's earlier feud with Taylor Swift over the video-of-the-year category. Among comments Minaj made in a series of July tweets, she insinuated that her lack of inclusion in the category's nominees involved racism, because "'other' girls" who break records and have an impact on culture get nominated. Swift felt targeted. Long story short, they patched it up with Swift apologizing. They even performed together Sunday at the VMAs.

Cyrus said in the interview that she felt what Minaj said was "not too kind" and "not very polite" and "there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love."
