Miley Cyrus opened her “Saturday Night Live” monologue by talking about her controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance.

"In case anyone's concerned, there will be no twerking tonight," she promised straight off the bat. "I used to think twerking was cool but then white people started doing it and now I think it's kind of lame."

Cyrus also said that she has officially killed her "Hannah Montana" character. Watch below:

In a later sketch, Cyrus (and her racy VMA performance) is blamed as the reason for the end of civilization in a post-apocalyptic America set in 2045:

The 5 Best Miley Cyrus 'Wrecking Ball' Mashup Songs

$

Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" was the twerk-filled song of the summer, but somehow the pop star has managed to nearly top it with her new single "Wrecking Ball" and its accompanying racy video.

But if there's anything better than the emotional ride  literally on a wrecking ball  it's when it gets mashed with other equally emotional songs.

Check out five of the best "Wrecking Ball" mashups. We promise you won't be able to get them out of your head:

1. When Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" and Mumford & Sons "Little Lion Man" come together — surprisingly beautiful things happen, like Isosine's "Little Wrecking Ball."

 2. After Sinead O'Connor wrote an open letter to Miley Cyrus, advising her on the music industry, it only made sense that someone (Robin Skouteris) made a mashup of the two. Here's "Nothing Compares to Wrecking Ball."

3. Miley Cyrus and Bruno Mars would do a lot of things for love. Example: This "Wrecking Ball" meets "Grenade" mix.

4. Mashup kingpin DOSVEC got in on the fun, too, releasing this Miley Cyrus vs. Dave Darrel mix.

5. We dug high and low to find this gem. Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" alongside Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" is deep and oh so catchy.

Here's What Gloria Steinem Thinks About The Miley Cyrus/Sinead O'Conner Feud

$

Gloria Steinem

Sinead O'Conner has written four open letters to Miley Cyrus since last week, advising the 20-year-old pop star not to "prostitute" herself to the music industry.

The 46-year-old controversial Irish singer-songwriter bluntly wrote

"The music business doesn’t give a sh– about you, or any of us. They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think its what YOU wanted.. and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, 'they' will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone..."

Cyrus responded by posting pretty crazy old tweets from O'Conner and comparing her to Amanda Bynes, who is currently on a psychiatric hold.

So what does famed feminist Gloria Steinem think of all this fighting and twerking and tweeting?

"I think they have different views of the world, and I would much rather be O’Connor,"Steinem told Vulture at last night's Women's Media Awards."I mean, she’s a serious human being. Perhaps they both are, but we don’t know that yet. But you have to remember that Sinead’s background — she’s been sexually abused. She was courageous in pointing out sexual abuse by the Catholic church. I’m sure it does pain her to see a young woman being oblivious to the endangerment of sexuality."

Steinem was also quick to note that she doesn't think the feud was a "catfight," but more "they’re disagreeing on substance."

Vulture also spoke to actress Rosario Dawson on the topic, who had a bit more sympathy for Miley:

"For some reason, when men [express their sexuality], it’s kind of like, cool, and masculine and mannish. But when these girls do it, it’s like, ‘You’re too young.' And there’s this responsibility that’s put on them just because of being female, that they’re supposed to be these role models. And I am interested in the idea that they’re kind of flipping the bird to that and just going, ‘I’m doing my thing.’ I’m kind of trying to take in the information so I can be helpful, rather than just shooting from the hip and [having] knee-jerk reactions to their behavior. Because I don’t know what it’s like to be a young girl in America these days, you know what I mean? It’s a different world. It’s fascinating. And I kind of dig some of the ways these girls are twerkin’ it."

A Little Person Explains Why She Turned Down A High-Paying Job For Miley Cyrus

$

Miley Cyrus MidgetIn this seemingly endless conversation about Miley Cyrus we've all been having for the past month or so, there remains one aspect of her current raunch rebellion that surprisingly few have touched on: Her frequent use of little people in her stage shows.

Miley has hired little people to dress up as bears, flowers, toadstools, and cholas. She has smacked their butts and twerked alongside them. At her Saturday Night Live gig, she hired one as a guitarist, thankfully choosing not to outfit him in an embarrassing costume.

Cyrus' use of little people is not terribly surprising when one considers that her favorite Hollywood hangout is Beacher's Madhouse, where they celebrated Cinco de Mayo this year with "Midget Mariachis." But it is surprising that no one has called her out on it, especially given how thoroughly the media has dissected her current moment over the past several weeks.

Now, an actress who was hired to be a part of Cyrus' performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards has opened up about why she walked away from the opportunity to hit the road with Miley in a lengthy and candid blog post. It's an eye-opener.

The actress, who acknowledges elsewhere on her blog that she's only been offered parts because of her size since moving to Los Angeles, explains that her gig for Cyrus felt dramatically different from others.

"I will never forget that performance because it is what forced me to draw my personal line in the sand. After our first dress rehearsal in the costumes with the crew, publicists, performers etc watching us, I walked out of the Barclay Center shaking and crying," the actress writes. "Thankfully, my best friends, Kelly and Kerri, happened to be NYC to visit me. They were waiting for me and I walked up to them and broke down. I love being the center of attention, but that was something different. I was being stared and laughed at for all of the wrong reasons. I was being looked at as a prop…as something less than human."

Elsewhere, she notes, "For the first time I felt truly ashamed of being a little person. We were being used simply because we were little. It felt like society still saw us as a joke, despite the fact there is literally nothing different about me other than the fact I am small. You would never make someone with Down Syndrome to come to your party as an “angry retard”. (I have been asked to go to a party as an “angry elf”)."

Still, the actress writes, she auditioned to go on tour with Miley, but ultimately chose to walk away from a generous paycheck and a free trip to Vegas.

"If the little person community continues to do performances like this, it is my belief that we will continue to only receive maybe 2% of the auditions and opportunities of our average sized friends. Society will think we’re OK with being laughed at because we still continue to do things that allow them to laugh at us or look at us as props," she insists.

The actress also participated in a Reddit AMA, in which she reveals that Cyrus' performance at the VMAs was very much rehearsed — right down to the tongue waggles.

Miley Cyrus And Justin Bieber Are Both Marketing Geniuses

$

miley cyrus justin beiber

Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber were both “cute” teenage performers that appealed to a wide audience of tweens and their parents.

Parents saw them as great role models for their kids since they both looked squeaky clean and appeared to espouse the family values so many parents want their kids to follow.

With some luck and help from entertainment industry powers, Miley and Justin quickly grew into teen stars that made a lot of money.

Miley Cyrus is estimated to have a net worth between $120 and $150 million whereas Justin Bieber’s net worth is pegged at around $130 million.

Miley Cyrus took the reins from Hillary Duff

Benefitting from the Disney marketing machine, Cyrus was Disney TV character Hannah Montana, a regular singer on the Disney channel, a concert performer that recorded albums, and the namesake of the a clothing line launched by Disney in 2007.

She filled the shoes of Hillary Duff, who portrayed the role of Lizzie McGuire and graduated from the Disney “School of Synergy” as did Britney Spears and many others child stars that came before dating back to the Mickey Mouse Club of the 1950’s.

Similar to her predecessors, as Miley moved past her tween years, so did her fans. What worked for the Hannah Montana crowd is not going to work for 20 somethings. The target audience, or lock, has has changed so Miley needed to come up with a new edgier image, or key, to remain relevant.

Just Bieber the first YouTube sensation

Scooter Braun, discovered Justin Bieber on YouTube and introduced him to Usher. The two of them brought Justin to Island Def Jam records. This catapulted Bieber into the limelight and put him on the track to stardom.

The first brand element people noticed was Bieber’s mop-top silky blond hair and boyish smile. It became his signature, and it worked really well with his target audience – tweens and parents who preferred their kids emulate the wholesome, innocent-looking Bieber over the other choices in the pop world.

Of course, Bieber was not as innocent as he appeared. He was clever beyond his years and studied the careers of other pop idols, such as Elvis, the Beatles, and Michael Jackson. From the beginning, he displayed a surprising degree of sophistication. When a hacker from Turkey broke into his Twitter account and made his followers go to zero, Justin tweeted:

“So I woke up here in LA and Twitter has been hacked. Turns out I am no longer popular. He then added… “Hackers, I send a warning … u have now p***** off over 2 million teenage girls. They are more dangerous than Navy Seals.”

As a result of his success, Justin has attracted fans from all over the world. At last count, he has nearly 46 million followers on Twitter, and his fans even have their own branded name – the Beliebers. Similar to Miley, as he approaches 20 and his loyal fans grow with him, he needs a new image to fit his changing audience.

Could it be good to be bad?

Starting with new hairdos, Bieber and Cyrus are indeed deliberately crafting edgier images to meet the evolving needs of their target audiences.

Justin is sporting more and more tattoos and is often caught exhibiting “bad behavior” in public – especially when the cameras are turned on. One day he is caught urinating in a restaurant kitchen, and the next he and his bodyguards are shown smashing equipment and fighting with people in a nightclub.

While this might help to transform his image from “cute and nice” to edgy, he is in danger of losing some of the support he has traditionally received from the public. In May, he was booed at the Billboard Music Awards, and Jon Bon Jovi slammed him for showing up late to concerts.

Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus (sporting her own tattoos) has caused quite a stir with her twerking performance at the VMA Awards and her naked ride on a wrecking ball in her Wrecking Ball video, which has over 231 million page views on YouTube.

While some parents from her Hannah Montana days are outraged, she has gotten a lot of attention, is selling lots of records, and laughing all the way to the bank. Like it or not, her audience is older and they seem to want what she is giving them.

Part of a deliberate rebranding plan

Let’s face it… neither of them can ever go back to being cute 15 and 16 year olds again. The best they can do is go after an older, edgier audience and keep their PR machines going.

Their behavior, while criticized by more than a few, is part of a deliberate market plan to shatter their goody two shoes images and create new ones that fit the desires of their changing audiences. They need new keys for evolving locks, and that is what they are creating.

If you judge them by the numbers — followers on social media, brisk record sales, and sold out tours, their rebranding plans are working really well.

Alec Baldwin And Miley Cyrus Make Surprise Appearance On 'Saturday Night Live'

alec baldwin miley cyrus edward norton snl

It was Edward Norton's first time hosting "SNL" Saturday evening.

Rather than let the actor have his own go at an opening monologue, he had help and tips from previous hosts Alec Baldwin and recent "SNL" host, Miley Cyrus.

Norton started his monologue great on his own and at the 1:45 mark, Baldwin made an entrance to give tips on how to deliver a better one. Cyrus then came out to give more tips on hosting and to announce a tour to her fans.

Overall, though the episode made obvious reference to one of Norton's latest movies, "Moonrise Kingdom,""SNL" failed to make use of Norton's one-time appearance as the Hulk in 2008 — he was replaced by Mark Ruffalo in "The Avengers"— and his cult classic "Fight Club." Either had the potential to be great sketch material.

US Censors Miley Cyrus Smoking Pot While Accepting MTV Europe Award

Miley Cyrus took advantage of it being legal to smoke pot in Amsterdam by lighting up a joint as she accepted an award for “Best Song” for “Wrecking Ball” at the MTV European Music Awards on Sunday.

"I couldn't fit this award in my bag, but I did find this," the singer joked as she pulled a lighter and joint out of her Chanel handbag.

The U.S. rebroadcast, however, edited it out when Cyrus lit up — instead the camera cuts to an ultra wide shot of the audience and comes back to her for an awkward good-bye.

"Had MTV opted to leave the smoking stunt by the 20-year-old Cyrus in, the network most certainly would’ve gotten into hot water with watchdogs and parents," notes Deadline.

You thought this year's MTV Video Music Awards show in Brooklyn was a twerk-filled controversy?

The network's Europe Music Awards took things to a whole new level last night in Amsterdam as Miley Cyrus smoked a joint onstage, Iggy Azaelia had a serious wardrobe malfunction, and musicians wore some of the most ridiculous outfits we have ever seen.

Check out the craziest costumes — because they can only be called that — from Sunday night's 20th MTV Europe Music Awards at the Ziggo Dome.

Miley Cyrus continued to push the limits in this barely-there dress covered in Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur's faces.

While accepting her first-ever EMA in the Best Video category for “Wrecking Ball,” Cyrus lit up a joint while wearing this unexplainable leotard and fur shrug.

Ellie Goulding left little to the imagination on the red carpet before she presented during the show.

Grand Valley State University Wrecking Ball Reinstallation Construction

Grand Valley State University is reinstalling a controversial wrecking ball sculpture on campus, but with a caveat — students are not allowed to ride on it.

The school removed the 500-pound public art pendulum in September after students repeatedly attempted to replicate Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" music video. While GVSU original cited maintenance concerns, "it appears that maintenance was to put up a fence around it and warning signs telling students to stay off," ABC reports.

According to ABC, a GVSU spokesman said, "I hope they keep their clothes on ... Second off, we're going to have some do not enter signage and if they do, they will be referred to the dean of students office."

There will also be signs around the 40-year-old unnamed Dale Eldred sculpture offering explanations of the art. GVSU will also spend $25,000 to build a 4-foot-tall fence and a concrete boundary around the sculpture, the Huffington Post reports.

GVSU students seemed excited that their sculpture was returning to campus:

The combination of the two nearly broke the Internet. Watch her performance below:

Miley Cyrus May Be Starring In A Very Expensive Super Bowl Commercial For Pistachios

miley cyrus 23

Pistachio maker Wonderful is known for using Internet favorites like Dennis Rodman and Keyboard Cat in their weird, minimalist ads, and they had a big hit with Psy's "Gagnam Style" Super Bowl spot last year.

Now sources ranging from AdAge to the National Enquirer are reporting that Miley Cyrus will be starring in a Wonderful ad of her own this upcoming Super Bowl.

Cyrus has been more popular than ever following the new, daringly weird image she launched this fall.

"Miley's name automatically gets a brand media coverage. But it can't be a brand that already has a strong emotional connection with consumers. It has to be a brand that's simply trying to get mass awareness," celebrity agent David Schwab told USA Today. Schwab also believes Wonderful Pistachios will be the lucky brand to land Miley.

Fox Sports is charging advertisers $4 million per 30 seconds during the upcoming Super Bowl, making it the most expensive one yet.

The Most Popular YouTube Videos Of 2013

Though we say it every year, this year feels like it went by fast. It's hard to believe the "Harlem Shake" meme came onto the scene last winter, or that Miley's jaw-dropping VMA performance took place in August.

As 2013 comes to a close, YouTube looks back on the most watched videos on its platform this year.

Here's what they found:

10. Wake Me Up - Avicii

9. Come and Get It - Selena Gomez

8. La La La - Naughty Boy featuring Sam Smith

7. Stay - Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko

6. Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell

5. Just Give Me A Reason - P!nk featuring Nate Ruess

4. Roar - Katy Perry

3. We Can't Stop - Miley Cyrus

2. Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus

If you guessed "Gagnam Style" would live on in infamy through millions of views, you were (sadly) right.

6 Stars Who Distracted Us From Their Music In 2013

$
0
0

miley cyrusContrary to the old adage, there is such a thing as bad publicity — at least when you're an artist who hopes to be respected on the merit of your work.

These stars should have kept that in mind in 2013.

6. Miley Cyrus

No one had more press in 2013 than Miley Cyrus, who expertly tuned her tongue and tush into an International Event with her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. But publicity stunts don't necessarily a long and fruitful career make: Most of the discussions about Cyrus this year were less about her music and more about her controversial image.

Even when she released her album Bangerz in October, most outlets were more interested in analyzing which songs had been inspired by her very public relationship with Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth.

Thankfully, Bangerz is strong enough that Cyrus doesn't seem in immediate danger of being swallowed by her own hype.

5. Azealia Banks

New York-bred rapper Azealia Banks has yet to release her debut album Broke With Expensive Taste, despite having released its lead single seven months ago. Though she was once considered one of the hottest up-and-comers in the rap game, Banks' ascent to the top of the charts has been hindered by the fact that she's most famous for picking fights on the Internet.

In 2013, she warred with Angel Haze, Pharrell Williams, Rita Ora, Lily Allen, Disclosure, Perez Hilton, Marina Diamandis, A$AP Rocky, and Lady Gaga. What was the name of her single again?

4. LeAnn Rimes

If record sales are any indication, chances are you didn't know that LeAnn Rimes released a new album in 2013 (Spitfire peaked at number 36 on the Billboard 200). But you probably did know that she's been engaged in a bizarrely public feud with her husband Eddie Cibrian's ex-wife, Brandi Glanville.

Though Rimes remains a tabloid fixture, people are currently more familiar with her relationship problems than they are with her songs.

3. Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber fell from grace over and over again in 2013. It started off fairly innocent, with pictures of him smoking weed with his friends (like it or not, this is not terribly shocking behavior for a 19-year-old).

But then there was constant speeding, an abandoned pet monkey, allegations of spitting in a neighbor's face, a urination video, and a visit to a famed Brazilian brothel.

So if people haven't given the kid enough credit for all the R&B tunes he's been releasing through his #MusicMonday promotion (including a pretty decent collaboration with Chance the Rapper), it's just because they're pretty distracted.

2. Chris Brown

It's pretty obvious that Chris Brown's behavior is messing with his career: Just last month, he was forced to push back the release of his album X to go to rehab. Rehab that he was forced into because of his predilection for punching people.

1. Kanye West

Kanye West is at a bizarre point in his career: He just released one of the most critically lauded albums in recent memory, but he's facing a backlash arguably bigger than the one that followed his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMAs.

The reason, of course, is his mouth. West is apparently incapable of trying to seem like a normal person in interviews, and thinks so very highly of himself that people actually figured a satirical article in which he claimed to be more important than the late Nelson Mandela was real.

That's when you might want to think about reining it in.

How Miley Cyrus Killed 'Hannah Montana' And Created An Uncharted New Career Path

Miley Cyrus VMAs

It all started with a haircut.

With the shearing of Miley Cyrus' perfectly coiffed long hair, so went her squeaky clean "Hannah Montana" image.

Since the chopping of her hair, Cyrus released racy music videos, hosted "SNL" with her tongue out, and smoked a joint while accepting an award on-stage. And who can forget when the nearly naked singer twerked alongside Robin Thicke during the most talked about MTV Video Music Awards performance of all time, inspiring the most popular Halloween costume of the year?

Needless to say, 2013 is the year Miley Cyrus effectively killed her "Hannah Montana" character.

But is it all part of a larger plan?

Ira Kalb of USC's Marshall School of Business wrote of Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber's marketing genius, despite any negative press:

"Their behavior, while criticized by more than a few, is part of a deliberate market plan to shatter their goody two shoes images and create new ones that fit the desires of their changing audiences. They need new keys for evolving locks, and that is what they are creating.

If you judge them by the numbers — followers on social mediabrisk record sales, and sold out tours, their rebranding plans are working really well.

Howard Bragman, vice chairman of Reputation.com, author of the book "Where’s My Fifteen Minutes?" a seasoned Hollywood publicist of 30 years, and good friend of Miley Cyrus' rock star dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, seems to think Cyrus is on the right path for a longstanding career.

Bragman, who has consulted on dozens of celebrity careers, says don't count Miley out despite the negative attention she received this year following her VMA performance.

"It's a rite of passage, particularly with these Disney girls. They seem to want to say 'hey, I'm not that little kid anymore, I'm a grown up lady,'" Bragman explained to Business Insider.

Miley Cyrus Hannah Montana

"Effectively she killed Hannah Montana [at the VMAS]," says Bragman. "Long live Miley Cyrus, I think that was the message."

The veteran Hollywood publicist further explains, "I understand it from a psychological point of view and a marketing point of view."

"From a psychological point of view, everyone tells Miley that they loved her as Hannah Montana and I'm sure she wants to throw up," he explains bluntly. "From a marketing point of view, these artists want to carry their audience with them — which is hard to do. It's easy to be hot for a while but in music in particular, it's hard to keep that going."

So how does Miley "keep that going" and where does she go from here?

"I think she has a different kind of path ahead of her, different kind of music," says Bragman. "Whether you liked it or not, she made her point. She had to be the caterpillar that shed her skin and now we're going to see what butterfly she's going to become."

VMA Miley Cyrus

As for how to do that, Bragman advises, "All it takes is a couple good songs and you're relevant and you're hot. It's less about branding and more about what resonates. I think this is part of her finding herself and finding her new brand."

While some reports said Miley's team was "freaking out" over her nearly naked twerk-tastic VMA performance, Bragman argues "I think they're thrilled."

"The VMAs were up 66% in viewers, she got over 300,000 tweets per minute, I do not think that any damage was done."

But Bragman also doesn't think that it's the people behind Miley who are pushing her new look and act.

"I think Miley's been in the business a very long time; I know her, she has opinions," adds Bragman. "She wouldn't do it if she didn't feel comfortable doing this."

Bragman adds, "You look at all the people who performed that night and we're all talking about Miley —who didn't win an award. But she won the night."

Not only that, she pretty much won the year:
